In drag racing, that person is Donald Glenn Garlits, also known as "Big Daddy." Garlits won the first organized drag race he entered with the first race car he built.
That's how it ended. The playgrounds of the young and fast generation in Southern California closed. Our hero's died; the front engine dragster had become a 230 mph death trap; it gave way to newly designed rear engine dragsters and new rules. For me all through the '60s and early '70s it was every weekend at some drag strip, AHRA or NHRA, The Pond, The Beach, Orange County, Riverside or Irwindale.

The Scorpion V was the next to last car that Bobby Langley campaigned and was a typical slingshot dragster for the time with the exception of the unique bodywork that was Bobby's trademark. The car's chassis was built by Don Garlits with the body and drive train by Bobby and friends. This would be the first car Bobby had that he did not build completely himself.

Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The most-celebrated driver in Drag Racing history. Don Garlits was born on January 14, 1932 in Tampa Florida. Garlitis was âa racerâs racerâ who could do it all.Â The first driver to officially surpass 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, 260 and 270 miles per hour in the quarter mile, he also designed the modern rear-engined Dragster.Â His presence in American motorsports was such that even non-fans knew about âBig Daddyâ and his legendary series of 34 black âSwamp Ratâ Dragsters.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Garlits first raced his street cars â like his 12.1-second/108-mph flathead-powered 1927 Ford Model T Roadster â in early events on abandoned World War II airfields.Â Then, in 1955, he turned a set of 1930 Chevrolet frame rails into a flathead-powered front-engined Dragster.Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â A Chrysler Hemi-powered slingshot Dragster â supercharged in 1959 with fuel-injection added in 1960 â was then built in his Donâs Garage & Speed Shop and from the late 1950s through the early 1960s it won many events and set numerous records.Â And in March 1959 Garlits advanced his career and helped the sportâs future when his quick elapsed times and high speeds proved legitimate at the first U.S.
Have no pictures but great memories. First came out from Staten Island in 63 or 64 when I 287 opened and saw Don Gartlits run over 200mph. Raceway park wasn't open yet. Our crew had iron as follows: 50 Ford Sedan, 53 Chevy, 55 Olds Hardtop, 53 Merc 4door, 57 Ford Crown Vic , no front bumper(had to run B Gas) lost badly but tremendous fun.I remember as a kid going down to Main street on the week end mornings and sitting on the Trout Brook bridge and just watching all the cars go by.

For seven days they check-in with inspections, did runs and qualifying, the long lines, repairs and drop-outs were nothing new.
As were most dragsters of the era, Tthe Swamp Fox was built on a tight budget by the late Mel Hoyh out of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Budget or not, the car lacked none of the vital parts that made fuelers so unique. Hoyh ordered the 170 inch wheelbase chassis from R&B Race Cars in Kenosha in 1967 and when he took delivery he had a superbly crafted race car, complete with a keenly sculpted full aluminum body.
The 1971 Winternationals was a great event not only because of Don Garlits' Top Fuel win with his new and supposedly unworkable rear-engine dragster but because that car proved that the safer design was competitive. Within two years, the front-engine dragster, in which the driver was in line for possible injury when any part of the drivetrain malfunctioned, was extinct in Top Fuel.
